The Human Library: A Place Where Difficult Questions are Expected, Appreciated, and Answered

Think about it.  There are 7 BILLION people on this planet.  7 billion incredibly diverse, strange, and unique people all breathing the same air.

How would you like to be able to well, instead of checking out a book, maybe check out a human? That's right, established in Denmark in 2000, a Human Library is allowing you to pick a person, any person and strike up a 30 minute conversation with them,

"the human library is a place where real people are on loan to readers."

Human Library's Enable You to Talk to a Stranger for 30 Minutes

Ronni Abergel, the 42 year-old who created the concept, told Today.com;

"Sometimes you see someone in the supermarket and think things about them but you don't dare go ask them questions.  I wanted to build a space where you can ask them anything because they volunteered to answer."

Abergel moved to Connecticut at age 15 as a foreign exchange student and he said the experience gave him a new appreciation for those that were different than him.

"I figured that if we could make people sit down with a group attached to a certain stigma they don't like or even know about for that matter, we could diminish the violence."

You Can Speak to All Walks of Life at Human Library

Human Libraries have opened worldwide in over 70 countries and are even here in the US including a library in San Diego, Vermont and Virginia and you can check out all walks of life.  Anyone from a nudist, to a homeless person to a refugee, to your unemployed neighbor or even anyone who's dealt with sexual abuse.
